Distinguished and Famous people from The Cradle Coast

🌟 Gustav Weindorfer

Austrian-born naturalist Gustav Weindorfer helped turn appreciation of Cradle Mountain into a campaign for its protection. After settling in Tasmania with his wife, Kate, he explored the area and built Waldheim, which welcomed visitors from 1912. The chalet made it possible for more people to experience the mountain landscape he valued. His advocacy contributed to the movement for a reserve, proclaimed in 1922. Weindorfer combined botanical interests with a notably practical conservation strategy: offer people somewhere to stay, then let the landscape make its argument.
